I would like all of my blog friends to send me a digital video (no longer than 30 secs) of something that is meaningful to them or a piece of their own artwork for an online collaborative art piece. This is an organization that I truly believe in. I have worked for them in the past and they inspire me to be involved with this as a way to encourage kids to creatively express every emotion they feel for healing and helping them to overcome the obstacles in life.

"Covered" A Documentary on stereotype-breaking tattooed women.

Although this isn't my work, I found myself thinking, "I wish I'd thought of that!".
This is a documentary that focusses on revealing the truth that tattooed women come in all sizes and professions. These women are not the drug-addicted biker chick sex object stereotype that exist only for men's fantasies. Bravo! Snakegirl Productions!

Back in 1992, I was lucky enough to capture one of Mia's powerful performances on the stage of The Colourbox, in Seattle WA. Mia gave me a gift that night that has connected me with some of the most amazing artists, women and men, in film, music, and writing. Over the years, she has given countless gifts to all who have come to know her through The Gits, (now defunct) Home Alive organization, her many friends and fans, the film, and (of course!) her music/voice and family. Watch existentialist German filmmaker, Werner Herzog in Les Blank documentary, Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe, as he makes good on a bet between him and Errol Morris (from the UC Berkeley campus). Then listen to a Herzog impersonator read from children's books. Then watch the life of a plastic bag narrated by Herzog. This is an amazing journey of an existentialist plastic bag. Documentary work

In the past few weeks, two amazing documentary ideas have come to me.

The first one begins with a Native American that was part of the 1969 occupation of Alcatraz Island. That story in itself is tremendous, but this one travels back through the recent heritage of this woman and covers what led up to her involvement and how it has affected her life since then.

This doc is a simple production with myself and one other doing everything that's needed.

The second doc is an adaptation of a book (adaptation also written by the author of the book). I don't want to talk about it with specific mention until I can find a Producer, but it is along the lines of rock musicians and activism.

If anyone knows of a competent Producer that may be interested in this, please let me know!

I'll continue blogging about them after production begins.

Art Live/work

It can be so rewarding to live in a building of artists. If I hang out with them I usually run to grab a pen and paper to write down a new idea for some project. This is so important in my life! But my rent isn't rent-controlled, and someday in the next year or two I will have to move on. I have gone through this inevitable move so many times before, and I end up losing a lot of my work in the process (items too large or oddly shaped to move). If I could just stay where I am for ten years, then I may be able to keep my work and nurture the friendships with the other artists in this building and artist professionals. But that isn't realistic, and even though I am in Grad school for film, I expect that with this economy I will be funding my own documentaries for a while. At least mini-DVs take up less room than a sculpture (though not as tactile). My situation isn't unusual. While there are a few low-income live/work spaces for artists there are not enough, and often times the rent isn't low enough or controlled, so it keeps on rising. It's worse in Seattle (where I was previously), where the demand is so much higher and therefore the rents are out of control (if there are any spaces available at all)!

My Art in Japan Exhibit!

Just found out that I will have a piece in an exhibit in a gallery in Tokyo, Japan on October 31, 2010 for two weeks. Other artists in the show include Nick Blinko, Mat Brinkman, and Julien Langendorff to name a few. I haven't decided whether I will exhibit as freetrinket or Lu Hanna. Any thoughts? I will post more info as it becomes available. Stay tuned...

As the first posting on this blog, I would like to say I am an emerging artist whose constant mission is to find exposure for my own work and those around me and to live in affordable artist housing (so that I am not constantly moving and having to get rid of my artwork to find space for the new). That being said I am constantly inspired by the things around me in the SF Bay area and will post it as it comes up. Cheers!
